The American Gold Buffalo derives its iconic design directly from James Earle Fraser’s famous Buffalo nickel first minted in 1913 – which served as a replacement for the Liberty Head nickels. The Indian Head design was created by the renowned American sculptor James Earle Fraser, who sought to honor the rich history of the United States through his acclaimed artwork. His obverse depicts a proud Native American chief, based on references of various prominent Native American figures of this time, most notably Chief Iron Tail, Two Moons, and Big Tree.  

The reverse features the image of a buffalo standing on a small hill, representing the once vast herds that roamed the Great Plains. When the U.S. Mint set out to develop a .9999 fine gold coin, they fittingly revived Fraser’s timeless Buffalo nickel motifs.
