Description

The Gold Mexico 50 Pesos Coin has a long history that began in 1921 to commemorate Mexico’s centennial of independence. This lovely coin is the largest value in Mexico’s gold coin series, which features five other denominations (2, 2.5, 5, 10, 20 pesos). The Gold Mexico 50 Pesos is an iconic and coveted piece of Mexican currency, made with 1.2057 troy oz. of pure gold (gross weight is 1.399 troy oz.) by the prestigious Banco de México. Because of its high gold content, it is a valuable addition to any investor’s portfolio. The coin’s classic design and cultural significance have kept it popular nearly a century after its initial release.

  • Gross weight of 1.339 troy oz. with .900 fineness.
  • Coins ship protected in sleeves.
  • Obverse: Displays the Winged Victory angel, as well as “50 PESOS” to the left and “37.5 Gr. ORO PURO” to the right, with the years at the bottom edge.
  • Reverse: Inscribed with “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” and features the Mexican national emblem of an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake hanging from its beak.
  • Many were minted with the restrike year of 1947.

The obverse side of the 50 Pesos Centenario gold coin depicts Mexico’s Angel of Independence monument. The Winged Victory statue tops the tall stone column, commemorating Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule in 1821. The monument was completed in 1910 after years of setbacks and delays. By featuring the iconic Angel of Independence on the coin’s obverse, the 50 Pesos honors Mexico’s hard-fought struggle for freedom and self-governance.

The reverse showcases a striking image of the Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, holding a snake in its beak. This iconic design, which is also featured on the Mexican flag, is inspired by the Aztec legend which guided them to establish Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City) where they spotted an eagle on a cactus eating a serpent. The masterful depiction of the coat of arms cements the 50 Pesos gold coin as a symbol of Mexican independence.

With its iconic imagery and cultural significance, the Gold Mexico 50 Pesos coin makes a valuable addition to any collection.
