The Gold Mexico 50 Pesos Coin has a long history that began in 1921 to commemorate Mexico’s centennial of independence. This lovely coin is the largest value in Mexico’s gold coin series, which features five other denominations (2, 2.5, 5, 10, 20 pesos). The Gold Mexico 50 Pesos is an iconic and coveted piece of Mexican currency, made with 1.2057 troy oz. of pure gold (gross weight is 1.399 troy oz.) by the prestigious Banco de México. The reverse showcases a striking image of the Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, holding a snake in its beak. This iconic design, which is also featured on the Mexican flag, is inspired by the Aztec legend which guided them to establish Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City) where they spotted an eagle on a cactus eating a serpent. The masterful depiction of the coat of arms cements the 50 Pesos gold coin as a symbol of Mexican independence.
