History of the Chinese Silver Panda

The People’s Republic of China issues this coin series of silver bullion coins. They issued the first silver panda coin in 1983. As a result, several mints produced them including mints in Shanghai, Shenyang, and Shenzhen. Chinese mints generally do not carry mintmarks, like US minted coins do. The official distributor for these coins in China is the China Gold Coin Incorporation (CGCI). The 1 oz Silver Chinese Panda is popular for collectors for its yearly changing design. 

The Design

The design of the panda is changed every year and minted in different sizes and denominations ranging from 0.5 troy ounces to 1 kilogram. So, on the obverse side of the coin is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. It is engraved with the words “People’s Republic of China” in Chinese closed off by the year of issue. The hall was built between 1406 and 1420. On the reverse side is a panda eating bamboo that changes every year.

Value of the silver panda

In 2020, the highest-priced proof coin was worth $16,430 with the highest-priced non-proof coin coming in at $3,100.
