Description

First introduced in 1982, the Silver Mexico Libertad 1 oz silver coin stands out for its cultural motifs and relative scarcity. With low annual mintages at the historic Mexican Mint, Libertads have gained a dedicated following among silver enthusiasts.

Silver has been significant in Mexico’s history. Before the Europeans arrived, the indigenous people utilized the country’s rich metal reserves. Today, Mexico is a leading producer of both silver and gold, with silver being a staple in its bullion coins.

The silver Libertad is a 1 troy oz. silver coin made by the Mexican Mint (La Casa de Moneda de Mexico) in its capital, Mexico City. Established in 1535 by Antonio de Mendoza under the Spanish Crown, it is the oldest in the Americas.

The Libertad displays the Angel of Independence, based on the gold Monumento a la Independencia in Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma. This statue celebrates Mexico’s independence from Spain. The Angel holds a laurel crown for victory and a broken chain representing freedom.

Highlights:

  • Contains 1 troy oz. of .999 fine silver
  • Coins will arrive in protective packaging.
  • Produced by the Mexican Mint (La Case de Moneda de México)
  • Obverse features Iconic Mexican coat of arms in 2 variations depending on year.
  • Reverse depicts Angel of Independence

On early silver Libertads from 1982 to 1999, the obverse features the iconic eagle as it perches upon a prickly pear, wrestling a snake with “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” written above.

Starting in 2000, the obverse spotlights the modern emblem encircled by ten historic shields, highlighting Mexico’s historically rich past.

The Angel of Independence dominates the obverse of the silver Libertad against the backdrop of the famed volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Though the exact depicting may vary by year, these symbols persist as icons of Mexican pride and freedom.

The reverse also provides the silver coin’s weight, purity, and year – hallmarks of the Libertad’s inherent value. Yet it is the evolving cultural designs that make dated silver Libertads so captivating to explore.
